A Minimalist South Indian Café

AVVAs Café opened in 2018 with a simple plan: serve South Indian food in the far north, where it barely exists. But instead of going traditional, we flipped the setting and made it feel like a laid-back neighbourhood café.

We’re a pure vegetarian café serving all-day breakfast, from crisp dosas and soft idlis to piping hot sambar. Paired with a spread of chutneys and finished with a strong cup of filter coffee – familiar, filling, and made with care every morning.

The food comes from memory, the kind that’s passed down, not written down.

Every dish is a taste of home, filled with love, tradition, and stories from the South.

Nestled in the heart of the mountains, this place has become my daily breakfast haven. As someone from Bangalore, I was pleasantly surprised to find such authentic South Indian flavors. The experience begins with a welcome drink of rasam that’s simply the best I’ve ever tasted—warm and flavorful. The food itself is outstanding. The staff here are courteous and attentive, adding to the serene, relaxed atmosphere that makes each visit feel like a peaceful retreat.

Highly recommended for anyone seeking an exceptional South Indian meal in a beautiful setting.

Avvas has been reliably excellent every time I go. It’s vegetarian downstairs and non veg upstairs with some shared menu items. The rooftop is a great place to host little parties. Downstairs they serve a complimentary chick pea snack as soon as you sit down. I’ve tried almost all the starters and mains. Everything was good. And the best coconut ice cream in town. The pineapple desert is also very good. And they have the best fresh lime masala soda in town. The views, especially upstairs, are great. Come hungry and come prepared. Oh and classical Indian music on the stereo was appreciated in the town of endless electronic music blasting everywhere.

Visiting Bir and not visiting this cafe, how’s that possible. The food here is amazing. The ambience? You can never find any beautiful ambience than this cafe. The backside of this cafe is heaven, leading through the bushes to the hills. Amazing, breathtaking. We had ordered Avva Special Dosa, Plain Dosa, Podi Idli, Dal Vada, Lemon Soda, Filter coffee. The dosas are super, duper good. Authentic south indian taste. They will welcome you with with Rasam drink which is a delight to the taste buds. The filter coffee was strong and amazing. The owner is also so sweet. A must, must visit place.

Avva’s is located in a grassy garden with huge windows looking towards the mountains and paragliders floating in the distance. The cuisine is authentically South Indian, with soft, crunchy medu vada served with tangy sambhar and coconut chutney. I’d recommend their masala dosa, it was just the right mixture of crisp and fluffy, with a delicious potato-onion filling. Everything’s served in steel vessels, just as in the South. The filter coffee will make you feel homesick, if you hail from anywhere south of the Vindhyas.

Best South Indian food ever. If you are coming to Bir, you probably are coming to Avva’s.

The story, the food, the views. I came here in 2018 for the first time and now I can’t have a dosa in life without comparing it to Avva’s (rather failing to). The staff is so hospitable as well. Do ask for experimental flavours and sweets.

PS – you might get lucky and run into the uncle aunty who runs this legendary cafe.
